Stop Applying For Jobs

Yesterday, I attended a life changing presentation by Darrell W. Gurney (www.careerguy.com) Executive/ Career Coach and 20-year recruiting veteran. Darrell shared with us the 10 principles in his new book: Never Apply For a Job Again! Darell kept me to the edge of my seat from beginning to end. He is definitely an expert on the subject of job getting, NOT job searching.

Here are the few key points and notes I took away from the presentation:

  • Whatever you are seeking is seeking you.
  • Fear of rejection is the reason why we are afraid to talk to people we don’t know.
  • Find creative ways of approaching and engaging conversations with people you don’t know.
  • Within the next 24 hours, start casual conversations with 5 people you don’t know without expecting anything out of it.
  • Tap into what is all around you, the people (,not the Internet.)
  • When people are engaged in conversations outside of formal environments, they are more open and friendly.
  • If you are not tooting your own horn, nobody else is.
  • The 4 M’s of stealth mode job search: Meet people, be Memorable, stay on to of their Mind, and Maintain the relationships.
  • Find reasons to connect to people outside of your needs. If people can tell your “need a job”, they probably will not be as open as they would otherwise.
  • It is possible to make “incredible” career transitions through the “back door”, less likely through regular HR funnels.
  • Someone with a vision and a mission is more attractive than someone who needs a job.
  • Treat yourself like a business. Job interviews are business transactions.
  • You can get to speak to anyone you dream of if you use the right approach. Use people’s ego.
  • Get an accountability group and hold regular review meetings on your job getting strategy.

Those are the notes I took from the Darrell’s presentation, but it was an hour of intensive and educative interaction. I recommend you attend one of Darrell’s presentations if you can, but not his webinars.
